LincolnHatesWerewolves#1 Cover MakingOff
Last week I was asked by Stephen Lindsay to come up with a cover for his and artist Lauren Monardo’s upcoming comic book “Jesus Hates Zombies/Lincoln Hates Werewolves”.
I did a few sketches and studies and even started an ill fated try… so I decided to start over from scratch.
Here is the full process from pencils to the full lettered cover.

It started with a blue graphite pencil…
Scanned and send it to photoshop to experiment with. When I got happy with it, I went back to the board with a clearer notion of where I would spot blacks.
Started inking. By the end I decided to include some cloth stars to populate more the background. In the inking I sometimes go back to the pencil phase to add some more detail, like in the gun, which by the way, is drawn after the same gun used to kill Lincoln.
Treated scan. Transform the .tifs into grayscale, go to the channels palette and click with the command key pressed to select the whites on the picture. Select inverse, copy, paste in one of the layers and you’ve got the line work separated so you can paint under it.
Colored. Had to do some tryouts before settling with this one.
Full finished cover. Lettering and logo done by me too.
